This week, Elder Wong and I were street contacting when I met a man named Zane on his way to school. He was studying his master's degree in Australia, but he had previously studied in Germany for a few years. I was really surprised, and he was pretty surprised as well when I could speak German. We talked for a while, and he agreed to meet with us that Saturday. He had lots of really good questions and a strong desire to learn more about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. I realized that God does not only prepare people for missionaries, but missionaries for people as well. We've met with him a couple of times since then, and he's really eager to learn more about the Restoration. I know that God placed me in Zane's path for a reason. He knows each of His children, their experiences, skills, and abilities.

This week, we were teaching one of our investigators about part of the Plan of Salvation. I had been focusing on really listening to them and checking for understanding frequently. As a result, he was able to see how the Plan applied to him personally. With this increased understanding, the lesson was much more enjoyable and less "robotic". One of the things I've learned lately with teaching is that in order to truly understand a person, you need to understand how they feel about what they've learned. If it's just information to them, or if it's just something nice to know, it won't really make a difference to them. On the other hand, if they can see how applicable the things they learn are to them in their everyday lives, they'll be able to see just how important it is to apply what they learn. As a result, I'm also beginning to see how the principles we teach really do apply to us all throughout our lives. That has given me that same drive to apply it to all that I do.

President Uchtdorf's talk in the priesthood session was so good. The words "You can do it now" have inspired me so much to get up and work, regardless of weather, rejection, or any other problem that accompanies missionary work. Sometimes, it gets tough, but all it takes is just a second to stop, remind yourself "You can do it now", and get back to work. I know that that statement doesn't just apply to missionary work, but to any situation that we face in life. God has promised time and time again that He won't leave us alone ever. He will always help us and remind us "You can do it now".

Last week, we read 1 Nephi 1-5. I hope that as each of you read it, you were able to see how Nephi was blessed by keeping God's commandments, even if they're tough sometimes. At first, Nephi was really excited and eager to do what the Lord had commanded him (chapter 3, verse 7), and even though they were unable to get the plates of brass on their first try, Nephi refused to give up. Instead, he assessed his situation, considered what he could do, and relied on God to help him. His dedication to the Lord and his desire to keep his commandments are admirable, and in the end, he was able to accomplish what he had set out to do.
This week, we'll continue with 1 Nephi 6-10. As you keep reading this amazing book, I promise that you'll gain a new perspective on what this book is and what it means to you personally. I know that this book is true, and that no matter how many times you may (or may not) have read it, you'll learn something new every time you read it.
Thank you all for your prayers, thoughts, and kindness. Each of you have influence me for so much good.
Love,
Elder Clark
