This week has been amazing. President Howes has let me have the privilege of training a very good missionary. Elder Jordan (from Elko, Nevada) has a lot of desire and love for sharing the gospel. We've been learning a lot from one another, and I'm sure that great things are ahead of us. We've been able to talk to quite a few Koreans, so the language is doing well. Speaking of which, we've been running into Koreans much more frequently lately. The Lord is giving us more and more chances to fill this part of our callings. I'm looking forward to training Elder Jordan, although I'm sure he'll be teaching me just as much.
Another great miracle happened as we were out talking to people in a park. I sat down next to a Chinese woman and started talking with her. Later on, Elder Jordan joined us and we had a short, but really spiritual lesson on prayer. She said it made her think deeply about God and if He could really exist. She agreed to pray, and we're trying to meet with her again soon. It was probably one of the most spiritually fulfilling experiences that I've had in Summer Hill so far. It's just great to find people so ready to come closer to Jesus Christ.
Obedience has been something I've tried to develop since the beginning of my mission. I actually got a letter from my MTC teacher a couple of weeks ago. It was a letter I had written a few days before I left the MTC and sealed in an envelope. In this letter, one of the first things I expected of myself now was being an obedient missionary. I had forgotten that I had written that, but I can gladly say that I haven't let myself down. Admittedly, I haven't always been perfect at following every rule, but I've always tried to be obedient and repent of any mistakes that have come up before they become habits. The great thing about the gospel is that we can always do better. A mistake I make today can become an act of obedience tomorrow. The impact that obedience has had on my mission has been the knowledge that no matter how the work or anything else is going, at least I'm in the right place and the right time doing the right things with the right people. I've never been overwhelmed by guilt or felt like I needed to hide my behavior from other missionaries, members, non-members, or anyone else. I'm not a slave to a disobedient life. That is freedom. That is obedience.
Last week, we started reading Ether. The Jaredites had three problems, a lack of air, a lack of steering their boats, and a lack of light. The Lord provided three different solutions. The first was something that the Jaredites could do, just change the boat. The second was completely out of their control, but the Lord promised that he would handle it. The third was the Lord turning the problem over to the Brother of Jared and standing by whatever he decided to do. I think this happens a lot. Sometimes we have problems that the Lord just hands back to us and says "I trust your judgement, just do what you think is best and turn it over to me so I can do what remains undone."
This week, we'll read Ether 6-10. Have a great week!
Love,
Elder Clark
