Week 83 - Looking Forwards and Backwards

The Christmas spirit has been very real this week. One of the great experiences I had with it was on the 23rd of December. As we were heading out to work, we ran into an old man who lives down the street from us and who we see from time to time. He's firmly committed to his religion and has no desire to learn about the gospel, but he's always happy to see us when he does because any friend of Jesus is a friend of his. Anyway, we were planning on going to his house to wish him a Merry Christmas that evening, but he met us on the street and beat us to it. He told us that he had put together a Christmas hamper and to come pick it up that night. So, we came by that night, sang a carol with him, and came home with a hamper and more importantly, the Christmas spirit. I'm thankful for the example of kindness and generosity from this Good Samaritan who was kind to anyone. The scripture comes to mind:

For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward. (Mark 9:41)

With Christmas and New Year's happening and so many people out of town, the ward wasn't attended by as many people as normal, so the missionaries were asked to fill in for everyone. The missionaries were the speakers, a musical item, and the teachers in Youth, as well as in Priesthood Meeting. It was a lot of fun, actually. We got to work with some of the members of the ward in a way that we don't always get a chance to. This experience showed me just how great the members of the ward are and how much love some of them have for the gospel. As much as we taught on Sunday, I think we were just as much the students.

This year, I want to work in a way that I can look back and say that I honestly did my best and that I gave people a chance to live the gospel. I realize that I'm not perfect and that some days, I will probably not do as well as I wish I could, but I want to be able to say that what I did was what the Lord sent me here to do. I also have a goal to be motivated by charity and a real desire to invite people to follow Jesus Christ. I want to be more humble in following the promptings of the spirit. Finally, I want to invite others to come unto Christ by helping them receive the restored principles and ordinances of His gospel.
Preach My Gospel chapter 12 has taught me so much about Baptism and Confirmation. These two ordinances are so important. This is the gate that puts people on the path to eternal life. It's not the end of the road, but the beginning.
It's time to read Preach My Gospel Chapter 13, which is directed to how we can all help people who are joining the church or coming back to it stay strong and live the gospel of Jesus Christ forever.

Love,
Elder Clark
